09:10 - 09:30 Case Study | A CDO’s Story, One Year In

At the starting point of treating data as an asset, how do you define your program and get it off the ground? How do you determine the problem areas and map out solutions to drive value? Harsh Tiwari joined CUNA Mutual as the CDO in July 2015, using the first year to get the lay of the land, map out problems and create the right program to solve them. He determined three pillars for success and developed a roadmap that will lead to data as a service offering.
Find out how to:
• Change the current environment to implement new solutions
• Find use cases for people to understand how to leverage data and better help customers
• Build out a data warehousing strategy and structure that can be easily used

Metadata management is one of the pillars to the house of data management. A recent industry survey identified metadata management as an ongoing pain point for financial institutions. How can you better understand metadata and data lineage from the point of view and standpoint of the business? How do you peel back the onion and see lineage from the point of system of record and help the business to be the drivers of data?
Panelists will discuss:
• How to determine where business metadata needs to be deepest and most accurate
• How to make lineage more readable to auditors and downstream consumers
• How to build a sustainable set of roles, processes and a repository to maintain it and mature the data management organization

10:45 - 11:25 Morning Refreshment & Networking Break In The Data Management Café

The data management story at Franklin Templeton Investments has had several milestones. In 2007 data was seen as a promising asset and a team of data librarians was assembled and directed from the IT side of the business. After a bit of a bumpy road, senior leaders agreed in 2013 that the business needed to drive and own data and a new approach was born to bring data to the business side and develop a new structure for governing data. Over the last year and a half the data council has prioritized integrating governance and stewardship into the company culture while identifying key areas of focus. During this session, three data leaders will share the story of maturing the data management program and competing as a key priority.
Speakers will share thoughts and experiences on:
• How to best get the ear of the executive suite and align with business goals
• Competing as a key priority across different lines of business
• Shifting from implementer of processes to strategist and thought leader

13:10 - 14:10 Lunch

The vast majority of CDOs and Heads of Data Management must demonstrate the value of data governance within 12-18 months of developing a program. Within the biggest banks, regulatory pressure is driving immense investments in data management capabilities, but what are the next opportunities beyond reporting? How can you leverage what you’ve built to drive value beyond regulatory compliance?
Leading data executives will discuss:
• How value is being demonstrated to the firm
• How decisions are being made around the onboarding of new technology and systems
• Approaches being taken in the shift for more dynamic data and leading indicators
• Ways that data is providing insight into new opportunities

Panelists will discuss:
• Moving to service oriented architecture
• Reducing inconsistent legacy platforms to have a smaller list of authoritative sources and get quality from the source
• Building architecture across the enterprise linked to data quality capabilities

16:10 - 16:50 Afternoon Refreshment & Networking Break In The Data Management Café

16:50 - 17:10 Networking Roundtable Discussions

#1 New to Data Management Meet and Greet
Designed as an opportunity to connect with those who have recently entered a data management function from another area within finance. Meet others like you who are getting started in a data management function and still feeling a little green.

#2 Getting Data Management Off the Ground Meet-up
From cost savings to consolidated functions to reporting, businesses are seeing many drivers to establish a data management function. Meet with others who are working to get a data management or governance function launched, keep the conversation going after the event.

#3 Maturing Data Management and Governance from Level 1 or 2 to Level 2 or 3 Meet-up
If you’re looking to take your 1-2 year established data management program to the next level, this is the place for you. Find out what others are doing to mature their program and evaluate the next steps on your roadmap.

#4 Maturing Data Management and Governance from Level 3 to 4 or Higher Meet-up

Connect with peers who are fairly advanced on the maturity curve. Find out how others are maturing their programs when different domains are at different levels of maturity. Lend advice to those who might be stuck and devise plans for delivering additional value.

#5 G-SIB and D-SIB Meet-up
Meet with your fellow SIFI peers. Discuss current pain points in regulatory reporting, new strides in BCBS239 compliance and objectives for the year ahead. Benchmark your program against your peers and share ideas offline.

The financial crisis brought awareness of data management to financial firms and regulatory bodies alike. New initiatives stemming from Dodd-Frank and BCBS 239 mobilized many firms to focus on best practices to try to “get their data management house in order”. Good progress has been made, but a lot of work still remains.

In this session, panelists will discuss the progress achieved, and the next steps that the industry is heading towards. Hear practitioners discuss their use of industry best-practice models, describe their experiences using the newly evolving data ontology standards, and get a glimpse into the next areas of regulatory focus. Hear how the industry is gathering together to dive into the defined data management capabilities to create a repository of playbooks – describing the “how” of data management, in a continuing effort to document and improve data management for the industry.
